Four Hebrew boys were enrolled in Nebuchadnezzar’s “College of Wise men.”
Daniel 1:6 NKJV
“Now from among those of the sons of Judah were Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah.”
They were soon to be confronted with some major challenges.
Firstly, their names were changed.
Daniel 1:7 NKJV
“To them the chief of the eunuchs gave names: he gave Daniel the name Belteshazzar; to Hananiah, Shadrach; to Mishael, Meshach; and to Azariah, Abed-Nego.”
The Babylonians were trying to strip away their Hebrew identity by giving them Babylonian names.
Secondly, they were compelled to learn and use the language of Babylon.
Daniel 1:4 NKJV
“…and whom they might teach the language and literature of the Chaldeans.”
Everything was being done to take away their Hebrew identity, and make them see themselves as Babylonians.
The final strategy to convert them into Babylonian men was to change their religion. They planned to use food to draw them into idolatry.
They were given food polluted by idols
 Daniel 1:8 NKJV
“But Daniel purposed in his heart that he would not defile himself with the portion of the king’s delicacies, nor with the wine which he drank; therefore he requested of the chief of the eunuchs that he might not defile himself.”
Daniel’s problem with the food was twofold.
First, the Law of Moses forbade the Jews from eating certain animals, but the Babylonian food included these forbidden meats.
Secondly, the Babylonians offered the food to idols before eating it.
1 Corinthians 8:7 NKJV
“However, there is not in everyone that knowledge; for some, with consciousness of the idol, until now eat it as a thing offered to an idol; and their conscience, being weak, is defiled.”
