The Sanhedrin continued with their fight with the apostles. Not even the miracle of the angelic deliverance of the apostles could stop them.
They sent soldiers to bring the apostles.
Acts 5:26 NKJV
“Then the captain went with the officers and brought them without violence, for they feared the people, lest they should be stoned.”
The arresting officers were gentle with the apostles for fear of the people. They came before the high priest and the Sanhedrin.
Acts 5:27 NKJV
“And when they had brought them, they set them before the council. And the high priest asked them,”
The first time, Peter and John had been arrested for preaching to the crowd that gathered after the healing of the cripple at the Beautiful Gate. They had warned the apostles not to preach in Jesus’s name.
Acts 5:28 NKJV
“saying, “Did we not strictly command you not to teach in this name? And look, you have filled Jerusalem with your doctrine, and intend to bring this Man’s blood on us!”
This time, they accused the apostles of flouting their directive, and spreading the gospel of Christ throughout Jerusalem. They also charged the apostles with accusing them of murdering Christ.
The apostles rejected the charges.
Acts 5:29 NKJV
“But Peter and the other apostles answered and said: “We ought to obey God rather than men.”
The apostles defence was simple. They couldn’t disobey God, just to please men.
They repeated the truth, that the chief priests had killed Christ unlawfully.
Acts 5:30-31 NKJV
“The God of our fathers raised up Jesus whom you murdered by hanging on a tree. Him God has exalted to His right hand to be Prince and Savior, to give repentance to Israel and forgiveness of sins.”
They proclaimed the resurrection of Christ and His exaltation as Saviour.
May you always stand your ground and proclaim the truth of God. May you always obey God rather than men, in Jesus’s name.
