Our Lord Jesus gave His apostles two unique promises. Firstly, they would surely be summoned and tried before religious councils. Secondly, the Holy Ghost would give them inspired responses for the councils.
Mark 13:11 NKJV
“But when they arrest you and deliver you up, do not worry beforehand, or premeditate what you will speak. But whatever is given you in that hour, speak that; for it is not you who speak, but the Holy Spirit.”
Jesus knew the nature of those Jewish leaders.
John 8:40-41a NKJV
“But now you seek to kill Me, a Man who has told you the truth which I heard from God. Abraham did not do this. You do the deeds of your father.”
Jesus knew they were inspired and motivated by Satan, and Satan never repents.
John 8:44a NKJV
“You are of your father the devil, and the desires of your father you want to do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and does not stand in the truth, because there is no truth in him…”
They had fought Him relentlessly and He knew they would also fight His apostles.
Jesus promised the apostles that the Holy Ghost would answer for them.
Christ’s first prophecy was fulfilled when Peter and John were arrested and brought before the priests.
Acts 4:7 NKJV
“And when they had set them in the midst, they asked, “By what power or by what name have you done this?”
The Sanhedrin wanted to know how they had healed the crippled man.
Christ’s second prophecy was fulfilled when Peter was filled with the Holy Ghost to answer the Sanhedrin.
Acts 4:8 NKJV
“Then Peter, filled with the Holy Spirit, said to them, “Rulers of the people and elders of Israel:”
The Holy Ghost always inspired a response that affirmed the gospel of Christ.
The apostles never defended themselves. They rather preached the gospel to their accusers and judges.
May you be inspired by the Holy Ghost to always provide godly answers and solutions. May you preach the gospel, in Jesus’s name.
